Protection starts at the surface. Mineral granules withstand the weather. Beneath them, a continuous waterproofing membrane keeps out rain and melting snow.
01Mineral finish
The first defence against the weather
Mineral granules protect the bitumen membrane from sunlight and weather. They are part of the upper waterproofing layer.
The finish and membrane are shown separately for clarity. On a real roof, they form a single product.
02Waterproofing membrane
Keeping water out
Continuous waterproofing protects the roof from rain and melting snow. This example uses an APP / APAO-modified bitumen membrane.
Membrane joints, parapet connections and sealed penetrations are just as important as the main surface.
Warmth stays inside.
PIR boards reduce heat loss. The vapour barrier beneath helps keep the insulation dry. Two different jobs that work together.
03PIR thermal insulation
Keeping warmth inside
PIR boards reduce heat transfer through the roof. The model shows their foam core and foil facing. Continuous coverage and tight joints matter.
Insulation thickness and thermal bridge details depend on the design for each roof. The model is not a universal specification.
04Vapour barrier
Moisture under control
The vapour barrier limits water vapour entering the roof from indoors. It helps protect the insulation from moisture.
Its performance also depends on continuous connections at walls and penetrations. A membrane alone is not enough without resolved details.
A solid foundation.
The concrete deck supports the entire roof assembly. Primer prepares its surface to bond with the next bituminous layer.
05Primer
Ready to bond
Primer prepares a suitable substrate for the next bitumen layer. It is a thin surface treatment, not a separate structural board.
The substrate must meet the chosen system's requirements. Primer thickness is exaggerated in the model to make it visible.
06Structural deck
The foundation of the roof
The structural deck carries the roof build-up and its loads. This model represents it as a concrete slab.
Before planning renovation, check the substrate's condition, load capacity and roof drainage.
