What is flat roof waterproofing and why does it matter?

Waterproofing prevents water from entering the roof structure, the building structure and the interior. Quality materials and workmanship protect against water in its various forms. Waterproofing is used where water can cause the most damage, particularly flat roofs and terraces outdoors and bathrooms indoors. Systems are classified by their materials, including bituminous, plastic and polyethylene products.

What types of waterproofing material are available?

  • Oxidised bitumen membranes
  • SBS-modified bitumen membranes
  • APP-modified bitumen membranes
  • APAO-modified bitumen membranes
  • PVC and plasticised PVC waterproofing membranes
  • TPO waterproofing membranes
  • EPDM waterproofing membranes
  • Spray-applied waterproofing

MODIFIED BITUMEN MEMBRANES

GENERAL MEMBRANE modified bitumen membranes are presented as offering higher quality and durability than conventional bitumen membranes and roofing foils. Modifications include SBS, APP and APAO; we work with APP and APAO.

A polyester reinforcement combined with modified bitumen allows the material to stretch by 45–80% without damage. APP and APAO products are designed to remain intact as they age and to withstand demanding conditions. The source product information describes torch application from −30°C and flow at surface temperatures above 150°C.

A natural slate mineral finish protects the surface and makes it walkable. Specific properties and installation limits must match the selected product.

Flat roof thermal insulation

Insulation can save substantial costs. The figures help explain why.

Buildings can lose 10–25% of their heat through the roof. An average Slovak household uses approximately 60% of its energy for heating, some of which escapes through the building envelope. Successful flat roof renovation improves comfort: less heat enters rooms below the roof in summer and less escapes through the ceiling in winter.

  • Preventing condensation on interior surfaces
  • Resolving leaks through panel joints
  • Saving heating costs
  • Improving indoor thermal comfort
  • Reducing thermal bridges through renovation
  • Comfortable rooms beneath the roof in summer

INSULATION WITH POLYURETHANE (PIR) BOARDS

Polyurethane is widely used for thermal insulation on flat roofs. The original description discusses combined insulation and waterproofing products and, for some systems, vapour control. These functions depend on the complete tested roof system; a PIR board alone must not be treated as the waterproofing layer.

Polyurethane boards offer a long service life and resistance to moisture, decay and rot. Keeping the insulation dry helps preserve its thermal performance over time.

Tapered polyurethane boards can form falls on older roofs and remove depressions where water previously collected.

Insulation is part of the complete renovation design, together with compatible waterproofing. We can also provide new metal flashings, lightning protection with inspection, chimney and vent renovation, and other related services.
